The Smile That Went on Forever | San Diego Senior Photography

DSC_4142-A copy Blog

Shelly had this smile that just wouldn’t quit! She fell into her poses pretty naturally, and we had a lot of fun photographing her senior portraits in Balboa Park! One of the things we love about Balboa Park is how many backgrounds we can do for different looks. And we always encourage our seniors to bring a few outfit changes to mix it up even more! Enjoy the sneak peeks!

What we did this morning!

This morning we were present for the NBC 7/39 San Diego morning news – what an early wake up call.  I don’t know how those newscasters and technical crew do that 5 days a week.  Thankfully, this was a special occasion for us!  This morning, they taped the cake segment for the upcoming NBC Throws a Wedding at the Prado, coming up in just a few more weeks.  Don’t those cakes look spectacular!  The 3 vendors competing are Sweetcheeks Baking Co., The French Gourmet, and Heavenly Cupcake.   Here are a couple photos from this morning’s broadcast:

Everything’s Coming Up . . . Flowers! | San Diego Photography

DSC_2024-A copy Blog

Meet Allison Stevens, owner and designer from Magnolia Flower Shoppe in San Diego.  We had an excellent “branding” session with Allison, where we incorporated her business (flowers) into her professional portraits for use on her website and social media sites.  She brought a lot of outfits, and flowers, and was open to the creative process.  For creative people like Alli, a standard headshot does not hold the same impact as a creative portrait that tells more of the story of who she is.  We had a great time, and captured some wonderful images!  Enjoy, Alli!

You can see from the twinkle in her eye that she LOVES to laugh and really enjoys life!

I just love this one – ultra soft and feminine.  Allison had the idea of incorporating the “pillow” of flowers into her session.  Brilliant!

Towards the end, we were chatting, and I suggested she do a “he loves me, he loves me not”.  Allison laughed, and said she used to do that for hours as a little girl.  Even then she was fascinated with flowers!

HAUTE! by BlueFlair | San Diego Boudoir Photography

Here’s another one of our “Hautties”!  Miss A was such a natural in front of the camera, and we had a great time photographing her.  She brought several different outfits, so we were able to capture different sides of her – from playful, to smoldering, to sweet, to seductive. When planning your boudoir session, don’t forget shoes and jewelry – they can complete the look!  With our boudoir sessions, we include hair and makeup – and it’s a good idea to change up the hair throughout the session for different looks.  Stay tuned, as we will be having a formal launch of our HAUTE! line next month.  Details to follow . . . .

Picture a Personal Makeover! | San Diego Glamour Photography

As a child, your mom probably took you to have professional portraits done each year.  But now that you’re older – when’s the last time you had professional portraits taken of YOU?   Are you a professional?  Do you have good quality images on your social media sites, blog, and/or business website?  Have you recently met a personal fitness goal?  Changed your hair? Looking for a unique gift for loved ones?  Or do you find yourself re-entering the dating scene?  Well then, consider a little pampering, and indulge in your own portrait session!

On-line dating services generally allow you to post a profile with images – and they recommend you have professional portraits taken.  Images you post are literally the first impression of you – make it a good one!  Show off your new look, that special outfit, and let us capture you at your best!  And guys – this includes you – the ladies will appreciate a well done photograph!

Social Media & The New Business Image | San Diego Professional Headshots

Social Media networking is changing the face of business, in many ways.  Now, instead of a handing a client a business card with a tiny photo of yourself, your clients are checking your personal website and social media sites, such as FaceBook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.  There, they may be able to read reviews on your products or services, and most importantly – they have a chance to get to know you, without the hard sales.  Especially in tough economic times, people will choose to do business with people they trust, whom they feel can provide a quality product and a good value.

It is more important than ever to present your “best face” at all times.   Your potential clients want to know that they are in the hands of a professional.  At the same time, they want to work with someone who is friendly and approachable.    To show off your best side, professional portraits are recommended.  Good lighting, composition, angles, and professional touch-ups all show that you take yourself and your professional image seriously.  Ladies, you won’t regret that visit to the makeup artist who understands photography – it makes such a difference – and we’re happy to refer you!

Here are some  recent images from our AMAZING Internet Presence Specialist, Bridget Ayers. Since she spends so much time on her laptop, we incorporated it into her images.  She’s fun and funny, yet smart as a whip!  She had both her hair and makeup done, and she had a couple of outfits for us to work with.  She booked our deluxe session, and we worked up several business portraits, as well as some personal portraits.   You can see how we rock the boat for traditional head shots, giving you that fresh, professional, and approachable look your clients will respond to.  With our deluxe package, you will receive multiple web-ready images for your graphic-rich websites.

Check out these images, leave a comment if you please, and then if you’re ready to boost your social media presence, check out Bridget’s sites:

Flexing Your Entreprenurial Muscles

We recently had the opportunity to meet a fellow entrepreneur, Brooke.  She’s a nutritionist here in San Diego, who has left the 9 to 5 life to make her own mark on the world.  So, girls, if you’re looking to get in shape for that upcoming special occasion, or “just because”, you should give her a call.  She’s smart and friendly, and will help you focus on your lifestyle, behavior, and habits, instead of just a quick crash diet, yielding more lasting results!  Brooke placed her trust in us to capture some fresh images for her website, and we did just that!  AND, she was kind enough to write a glowing review – see below!

Here’s the Review!

10 Reasons to to with the Flair, BlueFlair, that is . . .

10. These women rock: Undaunted by fierce waves, unsteady, slippery rocks, nor small children running through a photo shoot, Stefanie and Nikkie keep on clickin’, undisturbed, unperturbed, and generally happy go lucky!

9. They tell it like it is. This was my first experience with a professional photo shoot…unless you count the Sears portrait studio type deal as a kid. :-)  Nikkie and Stefanie listened to my thoughts and told me theirs and we joined forces to come up with a creative set of shots, utilizing motion, light and natural settings to the best of their abilities. They are the experts and I appreciated their honesty, especially at those moments when it was clear I was a complete novice!
8. They have integrity. Stefanie and Nikkie kept our appointment, even showing up early. They called and emailed when they said they would, answered the phone every time (themselves) and took a chance, showing up at our photo shoot without ever having met me in person.
7. They are passionate about what they do. They love the camera and their work reflects this. Both Nikkie and Stefanie have an artistic vision which transcends time and space and creates indelible images, evident in their portraiture.
6. They think outside of the box. Instead of standard studio shots, Stefanie suggested we go to the Oceanside Pier. And not just the pier, she suggested I climb way up onto the rocks, balance between 2 poles, and let me do fun things like backbends in the sand and run along the ocean’s edge with my surfboard. Then, when it got too dark for any more photo opps, Stefanie and Nikkie suggested we continue the shoot the following week at a nearby ranch, with peacocks. How’s that for creativity?!
5. They are do-gooders and pay it forward. During the entire shoot, we were contending with fellow surfers, kiddos and a handful of other photographers who apparently had the same idea to come out to the pier at sunset. Not ONCE did Stefanie or Nikkie get frustrated or upset that we had to wait. Not only that, I personally saw them giving tips and hints to family members on how to get great photographs of their kids. The parents were appreciative and Stefanie and Nikkie seemed more than happy to help out in any way they could. While others might have taken this opportunity to gripe about the wait time or to judge a novice photographer, these women seized the opportunity to share their knowledge in a kind and caring way.
4. They are entrepreneurs. They started their own company and are learning as they go and were kind enough to support my own entrepreneurial spirit.
3. They have fun. Stefanie and Nikkie each bring unique talent to their business and they joked with each other throughout the shoot. None of us had ever met before and we had a great time!
2. They go with the flow. What I like about Stefanie and Nikkie is that they do not have one set type of branded photography to which all clients must conform. Instead, they take into account what the photos are being utilized for and are open to trying different approaches to creating the desired outcome.
1. They give a one-of-a-kind photo experience. What attracted me to Blue Flair Photography was the sensitivity that came through in the portraiture, a kind of candid warmth and softness. In addition, they are color experts and utilize captivating backgrounds and natural scenery to enhance their images and create a look like no other.

To Portfolio or Not to Portfolio

It’s hard to answer questions about what makes a good portfolio pic.  Personally speaking I think the more original and artistic the better, but some say agents prefer uniformity…and let’s face it BlueFlair is just NOT about maintaining the status quo.  We take everything we do and pump the power up on it!  That’s not to say that everything we do is extreme, it’s just we can’t stand the “canned” photos offered by so many chain studios.  Whether those chains are for standard portraits or they are who “everyone” goes to for modeling or acting portfolios, assembly-line photography is just NOT for us!

So in celebration of POWER portfolios we’re showing off some favorites from a session with my very talented brother… Jonny!

Jonny was wanting to update his portfolio, and he let us take a liberal amount of creative freedom with him!  Thanks for being such a great sport, Jonny!!

Bridal Suh-Weet!

Did you know it’s customary to give each other a gift on your wedding night?  Are you looking for the perfect gift to give your honey?  Chances are you’ve spent months getting into shape so you will look your best on your wedding day.  Why not give him the gift of you?
With BlueFlair Photography, we offer our brides a choice of either a Bridal Portrait session OR a Bridal Boudoir session.  Either one makes a wonderful gift for your sweetie!
Our Bridal Portrait sessions give you the freedom to wear your dress an extra time, and get some very fashion-forward, amazing images.  You can choose to do this right after your hair/make-up “dry run” several weeks before your wedding, or choose to wear your hair in a completely different style.  These sessions are relaxed – no guests waiting for you to mingle with.  Go for all the drama and flair your wedding day may not allow for.

The Bridal Boudoir portraits are a more intimate gift for him.  These are sexy and stylish, never sleazy – similar to what you might see in Maxim or Victoria’s Secret.  Capture the soft, sweet, steamy, sultry sexy side of you he knows and loves.  He’ll love the gift, and you’ll love how beautiful you look and feel!

Boudoir Photography

hauteimage3

Boudoir (boo-dwar) – a strange sounding name, that’s been around for a few generations.  It’s French, and means “bedroom.” Boudoir photography, also known as “glamour” or “intimate” photography is that more personal, intimate portrait session as we enter the private setting, such as the bedroom.   It’s a chance for you to feel great about yourself. Many ladies find it liberating.  As Miss “C” saw her images, she had a big smile on her face, and commented, “Look how sexy I look!”   Women today are often too hard on themselves, only paying attention to what they view as flaws, and ignoring all the little things that make them so beautiful.   Boudoir sessions are perfect as a gift for your lover, or just for you!  Trying to break out of your shell?  Getting over a relationship? Trying to ignite a fresh spark in your current relationship? Just met a personal fitness goal?  Then consider booking a boudoir session!  Of course, an album or collection of your images make a perfect gift for Father’s Day, birthdays, anniversaries, the holidays – ok, really there’s no time your guy is NOT going to love this gift!

Not Just for Mother’s Day!

Portraits make great gifts at any stage in life.  We had the pleasure of working with Serena, who recently graduated from nursing school.  She insists she’s not photogenic!  What???  Of course, her mother loved the images, and chose an enlargement for her home.  Then she had Serena’s sister, Danielle come in (to preserve the balance of the wall portraits, of course).  Danielle ALSO doesn’t think she belongs in front of the camera, but the camera loves her, too!  And then Danielle’s honey needed a copy for his desk.  So – when thinking about child or family portraits, remember – any time, any age, portraits are a cherished gift for your loved ones!

Just Say NO to Traditional Headshots!

Headshots have always been associated with boring…I mean traditional, poses and processing. The need to look professional, composed, and appropriately removed from your potential client was the common mode of operation, especially in fields such as insurance, corporate business, finance, and law…but common is just how it made you look.

Traditional Headshot 1 Traditional Headshot 2 Traditional Headshot 3

That’s not to say that looking professional and poised isn’t important, it’s just not enough anymore. There are plethoras of service professionals out there available to each and every consumer, and let’s face it, looking like each other isn’t going to get them to go with you rather than the other guy. So what will get them to go with you instead of him (or her, whatever the case may be)? I’ve got two words for you…approachability and relate-ability (which I’m pretty sure isn’t really a word to begin with, but for the sake of argument let’s go with it). This leads us to another question…how do you portray yourself to a potential client as approachable and relatable? Well with the advent of social media sites such as Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Link’d In, and many others like them, professionals like ourselves are able to personalize not only our content, but our headshots as well. Posting images that show you as warm, caring, approachable and relatable are a critical step towards connecting with your potential clients. The things that set you apart from other providers or make your prospective clients emotionally connect with you will be what get’s them to stay a little longer on your site, so they get to know you a little more, trust you a little more and therefore consider working with you a little more. As examples we’re showing you some of our favorite non-traditional headshots from a few of our recent professional headshot clients.

Creating Unique Imagery

Photographs turn into works of art when you give them, context, imagery, and you spur the imagination. Nikkie and I love looking for shapes, lines, and other elements that will make a portrait unique, stylish, and fun.The images that are remembered are those that provoke an emotional response from the viewer. We find that by bringing in our beautiful San Diego surroundings, and staying away from the traditional smile and pose, we are able to bring out the inner thoughts and feelings or our subjects.

Here is an example of incorporating a rod iron structure with three beautiful ladies that results in three very different images.

Pictures Tell a Story

origens4

As child and family photographers, we get plenty of requests for the obligatory posed images.  With San Diego as a backdrop, people often want that “perfect smile” from their child at the beach or the park.  The parents request them, often not realizing how much more personal and “real” images are when we let them tell a story.  It doesn’t take a perfect smile, or even looking at the camera.  It’s those special little moments, the ones that moms and dads see everyday – those endearing little curiousities and “looks” their young ones have.  Things that make that child THEIR child.  Nikkie and I love capturing these special moments, and they’re always a favorite.

What is a special moment that was captured for you or a loved one, that now holds a special memory for you?

- Stefanie
